4 Weekly Class with Robert Coons

Introduction

Welcome to this auspicious Course in the study of Daoist Internal Alchemy Meditation!

Over the following four weeks we will be taking a trip through time, space, and tradition to learn the secret teachings of Daoist Ancestor Qiu Chuji.

Qiu (who’s name is pronounced “chee-O”) was the youngest disciple of the Daoist Master Wang Chongyang and founded the Dragon Gate Sect of Internal Alchemy, which went on to become China’s leading school of Daoism.

During his life Qiu left behind various documents, but it was commonly believed that his school of practice kept secret the Daoist curriculum of “Ming Gong,” the school of building Qi (life energy).

Aside from mastering the art of the Golden Elixir and achieving Daoist “immortality” Qiu Chuji was also famous for his good works, including a legend that he travelled to the West of China to ask Ghengis Khan to stop killing.

Just to say it again, it is not completely clear that the document we are reading in this course was actually written by Qiu or his students, but it is by far the most clear and easy to understand document on the study of internal Alchemy and it uses much of the modern language used by both Daoists and Qigong practitioners, making it much more accessible than other similar works which use coded language about mercury and lead, dragon and tiger, phoenix and turtle and so on.

I am a secular Daoist practitioner and researcher and have spent nearly two decades studying Chinese energetic traditions including Daoism, Qigong, Internal Alchemy, the Internal Martial Arts, and Chinese Tea culture. I studied Chinese at East China Normal University and Daoist Scripture during a multi year apprenticeship with a secular disciple of Cao Zhenyang of the White Cloud Temple.

My main focus is on the Immortality Study Tradition of Daoism, a Modernist School which emphasizes meditation founded by Ancestral Teacher Chen Yingning during the mid Twentieth Century.

I also work as a translator and editor for Chinese Medicine World, the Magazine of the Ontario College of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
